why Peace in a Community

Post Election Violence

Kenya has traditionally been one of the most stable and democratic African countries. However, following the presidential election of December 27, 2007 political unrest broke into violence. One suggestion for preventing future violence was to teach peacemaking skills in the schools so that young people could learn peaceful ways to resolve conflicts.

The Friends Church in Kenya felt that they could be instrumental in providing this curriculum for two reasons. First, Friends are a Christian denomination which has traditionally taught values that support peace. Second, Friends have many schools in Kenya. There are 240 Friends High Schools and more than 1200 Friends Primary Schools in Kenya. These schools teach over one million children.

Currently, print-based curriculum is being written for Friends Schools in Kenya. This website provides information and updates about the progress of this curriculum and the people involved in the process. The secondary curriculum for Form I and II (grades 9-10) is being launched in February, 20ll. The primary curriculum is still being written and is targeting 2012 or early 2013 for a pilot of the material. More than $100,000 dollars is needed to fund the curriculum for Kenya and to cover expenses for training workshops. The SEEDS Project is providing partial funding for this project but additional donations are needed.

As this curriculum has evolved, Friends began to dream that people from many countries might use similar curriculum in Christian schools and Sunday Schools. On this website you will find free curriculum for Classes (Grades) 1-8 which can be downloaded and used by churches or Christian schools.

You can help

In Kenya there is not access to the Internet in many locations so the curriculum must be print-based rather than web-based. $100,000 or more is needed to print this curriculum for all the Friends Primary Schools in Kenya and to train teachers to use it.

Funding for this curriculum is handled through Friends United Meeting, Richmond, Indiana.
